With all the news stories about online dangers and scams, do you sometimes feel like you’ve lost control over your personal information? While many Web sites today, including Monster, make strong efforts to protect their customers’ personal information, the best way to keep your personal information safe is to do so yourself. How? By controlling what personal information you give to others, you help maintain your privacy. These tips can help you do just that.
Look for Signs a Web Site Is Safe
Also, look for a privacy seal to see if the site participates in any third-party programs that certify compliance with certain privacy standards. For example, Monster participates in the TRUSTe privacy seal program, as indicated by the seal on the site. Monster also participates in the US Department of Commerce’s Safe Harbor Framework, arising out of the US implementation of the EU Data Protection Directive, a framework the US created to help US companies comply with EU privacy requirements.
Decide Who You Want to Hear From
You can decide whether to receive newsletters, updates or offers from a Web site. If you do sign up to receive them, you can always change your mind later. Usually, the Web site’s privacy statement will provide specific instructions about how you can opt out of these communications. At Monster, you can opt out of receiving newsletters or other offers by logging into your account and going to your account profile page.
There should be no charge for opting out of marketing communications from the company. Keep in mind that some sites may still need to send you important emails that relate to a service you signed up for, so you may not be able to opt out of receiving emails altogether. For example, Monster may need to provide you with important security updates and may notify you by email; you won’t be able to opt out of receiving these types of messages.
Manage Your Online Image
Take care to manage your information when networking, posting on message boards or blogging. If you participate in online social networks or on blogs, be careful about your contacts and the information you share. Connect only to people you trust. Do not post information about yourself you would not want shared with strangers.
Information you share on the public portions of Monster, such as message boards, can be viewed by anyone who visits the site. However, Monster has options available to limit exposure of your direct contact information and help protect you from misuse by third parties. Monster also allows job seekers to control the degree of exposure their resume receives. Monster does not control what happens with job seekers’ information or resumes once they have been accessed by third parties.
Never share your Monster account user ID or password with anyone, not even another person in your company. Protecting your access credentials allows you to maintain control over your personal information. It also allows Monster to ensure it provides the services you’ve requested and respect your choices in how you wish to use the site.
